What is LENS?
Various factors, such as chemical imbalances, environmental influences, stress, illness, and injuries, can cause the brain to become entrenched in specific patterns. These patterns can affect the central nervous system and impact the neural pathways in the brain. However, by strategically placing electrodes on the head and neck, we can disrupt these entrenched patterns using a process known as low-energy neurofeedback.
Low Energy Neurofeedback System (LENS) is an FDA approved, completely safe, scientifically backed, non–invasive intervention that uses a person’s unique brainwaves to aid their brain in auto-correction.
This auto-correction helps support the central nervous system in areas of emotional regulation, overall cognitive functioning, and brain optimization. Unlike traditional neurofeedback, the client doesn’t need to “do” anything, there is nothing to learn and does not require a person to sit for long periods of time. With children, this is an added bonus.
It’s important to know that LENS does not focus on a person’s diagnosis. If you find yourself…
Having a hard time focusing at work, school or in conversations
Struggling in areas requiring cognitive processing
Feeling easily frustrated or overstimulated
With anxiety or low moods that gets in the way of your motivation or activities
Feeling like you're stuck in the therapy process with EMDR or other tools not helping as much as desired
Having big reactions and just want to feel more in control
Wanting to optimize your brain health for athletics or other types of performance
These reasons and more are why it is used in over 40 countries by musicians, performers, professional athletes, and many Olympians and teams.
It can also be effective in helping those who are dealing with acute or chronic physical pain or neuropathy. A simple signal to the CNS serves as a catalyst to a complex neurological process of pain that helps reduce muscular tension, spasms, myofascial guarding, inflammation, as well as stimulate necessary blood flow and nerve endings that help the healing process.
What is a typical session like?
Upon arrival, a client can expect a brief time to be listened to and cared for, as well as getting answers to any questions they may have.
LENS begins with the strategic application of small sensors (electrodes) to the scalp, via prep gel and paste, in order to capture brainwave activity. Using special computer software, those readings are processed about your brainwave patterns and frequencies and information is displayed on a computer screen.
As each client’s brain waves are unique to them and constantly changing, the LENS measures these everchanging signals and matches the feedback to the client’s own physiological (neurological) fingerprint. The results of this mirroring technique is a reduction and/or resolution of the symptoms which previously interfered with the client’s quality of life.
LENS is remarkable at lifting areas of the brain that have become suppressed or impaired by a myriad of circumstances and then helping the brain and neural pathways to optimize and self-regulate. It is a painless process that only requires seconds per area the sensors are applied.
If localized pain, a wound or injury is also an area you would like to address, BODY LENS uses 5 small electrodes to surround the area, or an area close, and provide a painless, non-medicinal signal through the nervous system that lasts for only seconds to minutes, depending on the need.
Will it interact with medications?
It is strongly recommended that your prescribing physician is aware of your participation in neurofeedback. There have been some instances where certain medications may slow down the therapeutic benefits, while some may actually impact the speed of medicinal results. You will never be advised to discontinue any medication without the supervision of your prescribing doctor.
It has been noted that many clients who undergo LENS therapy while on medication often find they require less of it to achieve the same benefits. As you progress through your program and start noticing improvements, you may find that you need less medication.
Since this is a non-traditional, more holistic approach to wellness, your physician may have a different perspective on neurofeedback, but I am more than willing to work closely with you and your healthcare team to ensure the best possible outcomes.
What might I feel after a session?
This will vary from person to person because of our unique physiology and will be discussed thoroughly before beginning your first treatment.
Some common experiences include feeling a but tired after a session due to the brain shifting and opening up pathways that have not been used for years. Slight fatigue is an indicator the therapy is effectively addressing the maladaptive patterns your brain has established.
Most clients report immediate relief from anxiety, feeling relaxed, or more energetic, focused, and less stressed. Your brain and central nervous system will choose which area it wants to address first, so it’s difficult to predict.
But there have been reports of seeing colors more vividly, moods have lifted, pain has lessened with a more “bright” type of perspective afterwards. The changes can be mild and subtle or immediate and noticeable.
How many sessions will I need?
This depends on your unique physiology and the desired outcome of your treatment. Though there are no guarantees, but current statistics of millions of clients report 85% or higher that feel a noticeable difference after just 3 LENS treatments, while most people need at least between 10-12 sessions, with the majority finding success around 20 with periodic “tune ups” or “check-ins” as desired.
